A good win, now they must build on it. That’s the message from Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen after his side’s second half blowout to send Irish side Ulster packing with a massive win at Ellis Park during their Vodacom United Rugby Championship match on Saturday.

The Lions scored 35 points in the second half to cruise to a 49-31 win over Ulster in a high-scoring game, backing up their win over the Scarlets and now looking ahead to a month’s break before they face the Bulls in a cross-Jukskei derby.

While Ulster faded badly in the last 20 minutes and the Lions scored four tries in this period, the die was cast during the first hour when the pace of the game was inevitably going to catch up to the visitors.

But that doesn’t undermine the result for the Lions, where the five valuable points were met with a sigh of relief after losses in their three opening games put pressure on the coaching side.

“We knew we had to lift our game because Ulster had beaten two good South African teams in the Bulls and Sharks, home and away,” Van Rooyen said afterwards.

“They showed their class in those games, so for us to get five points, we are happy with that. But I’m more proud of the hard work we put in and how we did it. We can really build on this.

“The guys really played hard and put in a lot of effort. The 2pm kick-off was as tough for us as it was for them. I think as the game progressed we got more efficient and our error rate went down.

“Our exits still put us under a bit of pressure, but we challenged the guys this week (to put in a big performance) and they responded.”

The second half, after going into the break 19-14 down, was the big difference as they upped the tempo in the last quarter and Ulster couldn’t compete.

“We were creating the right pictures in that first half. We had unbelievable sets on both defence and attack. If you look at the work that we did in that final defensive set before halftime, and it was inches in the corner, otherwise we could have prevented the try,” Van Rooyen said of Robert Balloucoune’s hat-trick effort on the stroke of halftime.

“That shows how hard we are working. So at halftime, we were quite technical in our talk. We were creating the right pictures, and we needed just one or two changes. We knew we could put them under pressure if we were a little more accurate.”

The Lions will now enjoy the time off before facing the Bulls in what will be a massive derby.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks go into recess this week as the Vodacom URC breaks for the international window, but it is understood that it is going to be a critical period of the field for the Durban franchise with changes set to be made to the management team.

Although his team won 29-19 against Scarlets and picked up a full house of log points to bring a bit of stability to their challenge, Sharks coach John Plumtree did not look like a happy camper when he arrived at the post-match press conference at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

While it was a winning performance, it was clear his team still hasn’t gelled and he said so: “We still look a little bit like a side that hasn’t fully gelled. We’re not totally collective at the moment.”

After only having his Springboks back, and they make up the core of his team, for three days before the previous week’s loss against Ulster, the week together before the Scarlets game did lead to an incremental improvement. But it was only marginal, for while there was some attacking shape in the first half, they appeared to lose it again in the second.

Plumtree acknowledges the problem, and says it will take time to fix. The challenge he faces is that after getting his Boks back for two games, they are unlikely to be on duty against Connacht in the next game in Galway on 29 November as the national team plays Wales in Cardiff in an outside the international window game that day.

“We’ll have to prepare for Connacht without the Boks, and use them only if they’re available and lightly raced. This time of year up north can be tough so we’ll see how each individual copes,” Plumtree said.

A CHANCE FOR A RARE ‘MINI’ PRE-SEASON

However, this may be a time when, for once, Plumtree can do without his Boks as the selection of the latest Bok squad and the imminent return from injury of a few stalwart players in the coming weeks means he will have something he didn’t have in the pre-season - sufficient numbers at training.

“We’re getting Jason Jenkins back, we’re getting Emile van Heerden back, we have a few experienced players who were not selected for the Bok tour, so this is an opportunity over the next five weeks to get the work in that we need to on our game,” said the coach.

Just which coaches will be overseeing the buildup to the Connacht game though is a matter of speculation, and Monday is going to be a big day for the Sharks as a meeting is scheduled for staff members who have been told to report to work with written explanations of what exactly it is they do at the union/franchise.

That applies apparently to assistant coaches and other backroom staff, it is not known if it applies to the head coach.

What is clear is that changes will be made, with the director of rugby Neil Powell having reported back to the coaching group last Monday that changes would be made to the management.

Whether that means it is Plumtree’s career at the Sharks that is on the rocks or a shake-up to the assistants, or perhaps even a change to Powell’s designation and a revamp of the contracting department, something which many who are close to the Sharks feel is necessary, we will only know as the situation unfolds in the coming days.

The name of Brendan Venter, who coached the Sharks for a few months when Plumtree was axed by the then CEO John Smit in 2013, has been circulated for a role somewhere in the system. Venter has always been reluctant to take on a head coaching role as he has a medical practice in the Western Cape and it will be interesting to see if that has changed.

EGO-CONTRACTING CREATES A TOUGH CHALLENGE FOR ANY COACH

Whatever the case, a new coach would have a tough task as the core of the Sharks’ problem is the ego-contracting that the American consortium embarked on when they first arrived as equity partners.

Having too many current Springboks on your books at a time when they are committed to a 12 month season but have no pre-season with their franchise coach is not the advantage it used to be in the Super Rugby era, when there was no overlap between franchise and international rugby.

The problem of gelling what effectively at the Sharks is two distinctly different teams, with the players who work together during the pre-season months and in the early parts of the season having to be reintroduced to the Boks when they return, was evident long before Plumtree arrived and was effectively what cost one of his predecessors, Sean Everitt, his job.

Everitt had no hand in contracting and, after starting out on a building phase with a young team, was suddenly landed with a team of marquee players, some of whom did not fit his playing template.

But if you have big names on your books who are paid millions you have to play them, and it broke down the culture that Everitt had been building and there is a science to contracting that people who don’t have a proper feel for the sport are perhaps oblivious to.

As so often happens in professional sport it is the poor management and poor decisions of the people who now get to decide on Plumtree’s future that have effectively led to the failures that they are trying to address.

PLUMTREE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN JOB ON HIS TERMS

One of the knee-jerk reactions to defeat of previous Sharks CEO Eduard Coetzee was to create the director of rugby position to oversee Everitt, but it has led to a fudging of leadership roles that led Victor Matfield recently to ask who is actually in charge at the Sharks.

My dealings with Powell have only been on the subject of youth rugby and the pipeline of talent, and that appears to be working well at present, and there’s been no cross-over into any other lanes. But maybe more clarity is needed on who does what. If his jurisdiction is youth rugby, why do we frequently see Powell in the coaching box when the senior team plays?

Plumtree’s biggest error when he agreed to take the Sharks job was to not insist on doing it on his own terms, meaning that he be the sole leader and also that he get to appoint his assistants. Perhaps that would be the wise way forward for the Sharks now - tell Plumtree he is the leader, he makes all the decisions from now on and only him, and if that doesn’t cut it then he’s out the door.

But there has been way too much turnover of coaches at the Sharks over the past 12 years for the failures at the union to all be the coaches fault so hopefully this week we are not going to see another repeat, with the real more deep rooted problems at the franchise once again being ignored.

With five games completed the international break comes just one match short of a third of the way through the Vodacom United Rugby Championship season and it is the DHL Stormers who are in a league of their own when it comes to the South African teams.

John Dobson’s men are one of just two teams unbeaten at the end of the first phase, and that other team, Munster, came close to losing at home to Connacht at the weekend. The Stormers top the log by virtue of their vastly superior points difference after they completed perhaps their best ever overseas tour by winning their clutch game against Benetton.

It was a clutch game from the sense that although they’d already beaten Zebre and the Scarlets on tour, they’d never won in Treviso against the much stronger of the two Italian sides and they said beforehand that the game would be the litmus test for the changes they have made in their quest to improve their overseas record.

They passed that examination with flying colours, coming from 16-8 down at halftime to dominate the second half, where they scored 23 unanswered points to deal a severe blow to any title contentions that Benetton may harbour.

The Stormers’ next game is away against Munster and of course they won’t be helped by the fact that the Springboks will be playing Wales that day outside of the international window.

LIONS WIN WASN’T THE SURPRISE SOME MAKE OUT

However, it was important for them to beat Benetton so that they can travel to Limerick five weeks hence with some confidence, and they did that on a weekend where the Lions were the other standout local performers with their win over Ulster.

By beating Ulster in an early afternoon shoot-out, a kick-off time that always suits them in home games where visiting teams have to deal with heat in addition to the altitude, the Lions helped the other local teams as Ulster had been flying before they got to Johannesburg.

In fact, that was probably one of the reasons they lost - while the result might have surprised many, it did not surprise me, as readers of the supersport.com preview on Friday will know.

A Lions win was predicted, and not just because of the advantages the Lions have at home in the summer months but also what beating the Vodacom Bulls and Hollywoodbets Sharks in successive weeks would have taken out of Ulster.

When they won in Durban, Ulster would have thought it was their mission accomplished in South Africa, and they sent back some of their Ireland internationals in the week building up to the Ellis Park game. That is not to denigrate the Lions’ achievement - they were very good at times in their win and being at home has brought back some of their strut after a poor overseas tour.

However, given that their commitment to the Currie Cup in the weeks building up to the URC kick-off usually comes back to bite them much later in their campaign, through the fatigue that sets in, they should be lamenting a record that reads three losses in five starts. It puts them eighth, but they were supposed to be battle hardened from playing in the domestic playoffs.

CAPE TEAM BENEFITTING FROM GOOD PRE-SEASON PREP

The Stormers, as their Alta-ego Western Province, never chased Currie Cup success this year, and went all-out development instead, with very little cross-over between the domestic squad and the URC squad, and it is one of the reasons they’ve started so well.

They are also the diametric opposite of the Hollywoodbets Sharks, in the sense that with only Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Damian Willemse and Cobus Reinach missing to the Springbok Castle Lager Rugby Championship campaign, they had nearly all hands on deck during the pre-season.

It meant that, much like two of the other teams that have done well so far, Munster and Ulster, they’ve got the team work, culture and combination gel that the Sharks, who at times only had eight players at training in the pre-season as injuries were added to the absence of the Boks, just don’t have.

SHARKS STILL STUTTERED

And while the Sharks did finally break their duck by beating the Scarlets, and their attack was better than the previous week, at least in the first half, their coach John Plumtree was still far from happy at the post-match press conference.

Rightly so too, for his team still stuttered, and watching from the vantage point of the Hollywoodbets Kings Park press box, it seemed evident that once again the team appeared to lack energy for periods of the game.

That led to the soft moments that kept the Scarlets in the game, such as when Vincent Tshituka lazily reached out to stop a kick from the Scarlets fullback that led to the player scoring his team’s second try. He should have dived on the ball. Later he let the ball bounce.

Pinpointing Tshituka though may be unfair because he’s not one of the top Boks in the Sharks team and it was there that the alarm bells should maybe be ringing for more than just the Sharks coach but also for Bok coach Rassie Erasmus.

The constant treadmill the Boks are on with the commitment to the Rugby Championship in what should be the offseason is going to catch up with them some time and, to put it frankly, many of them just looked tired against the Scarlets. And against Ulster the previous week.

That wasn’t the case for the Stormers on their tour with the Bok duo they drew on, Feinberg-Mngomezulu for two games and Willemse for all three, mainly because neither of those two players have been over-played in the past year.

It will be recalled that Willemse was out injured for much of the last URC season, and so was Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who also missed the last November Bok tour.

DURBANITES PAYING FOR POOR CONTRACTING

The Stormers though don’t overly rely on those two players, and that is where their contracting has been so much better over a period of time than the Sharks.

When a headline appeared on the Stormers team announcement press release stating that there were eight changes from the team that won in Parma, it was easy to imagine the team had been weakened. That usually is the case with the Sharks, where there is a wide chasm between the first choice team and second choice team.

That is not the case with the Stormers though, and they were as strong, if not stronger, going into the Benetton game than they were the previous week. Which is a testament to the depth that director of rugby Dobson is building up at the franchise.

As it turned out the man who replaced Feinberg-Mngomezulu, man of the match Jurie Matthee, turned in a dominating performance, with his contribution far exceeding just the 21 personal points he contributed.

Apart from the Stormers and Munster the other surging team in the competition is Glasgow Warriors, who showed their class in beating the Bulls in Glasgow at the start of the weekend. There wasn’t really any surprise about the result as the Warriors are hard to beat at the Scotstoun, but the Bulls, after two defeats, will be under pressure when the URC resumes at the end of November.

So will the Sharks and the Lions, with the Stormers experiencing a more positive kind of pressure - in the sense that a win in Limerick will really put them in the pound seats.

DHL Stormers flyhalf Jurie Matthee put on a career-defining performance, scoring 21 points as his side kept up their incredible start to the Vodacom United Rugby Championship with an impressive 31-16 win over Benetton in Treviso on Saturday night.

This means the Stormers keep up their impressive unbeaten run in the competition after five rounds and currently sit on top of the log with the other unbeaten side in the competition - Munster - still to play.

Still, the win was not only noteworthy because they had lost at the same venue last season, but also the way it was achieved and the fact that it was Benetton’s first loss at home for a full calendar year, which is rather remarkable in a competition like the URC.

Matthee’s performance was the classical flyhalf dominance. He controlled the game superbly, scored a try, kicked four penalties and two conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking over when it mattered the most.

UNBEATEN TOUR

In all the Stormers ended their tour unbeaten, a massive step forward for them as they perennially have struggled abroad, but also have set the pace in this URC season and have found ways to win where in the past they have struggled.

Their scrum, their play at the rucks and their ability to strike when it counts have been key factors.

The fact that after three out of five games abroad, they have managed to keep their opposition down to less than 20 points is also something special.

Norman Laker will be extremely proud of the defensive performance put out by the side on the tour, and especially against a dangerous attacking side like Benetton.

The win was impressive not only because it was away from home, but because of the game management the Stormers showed under pressure and while it may not have looked like it at the beginning of the season, it will take a tough team to stop the momentum they now have on their side.

Matthee has often fallen in the shadow of the more illustrious of his playmaker counterparts at the franchise as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu Damian Willemse and Warrick Gelant and others tend to steal the limelight.

MATTHEE’S GAME MANAGEMENT TOPS

But on Saturday night the young pivot displayed all the hallmarks of a complete 10. His running style, game management and decision taking were superb, not to mention his kicking which kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Considering the Stormers were 16-8 behind at the break, it is hardly surprising that he gets such praise.

As we have seen with other South African franchises, the ability to dominate away from home is not always as easy as it seems.

Still, they were in control early on but let it slip as Benetton grabbed the momentum in the first half.

But the second half belonged firmly to the visitors as they took control and enjoyed the lead until the final whistle.

It was Sazi Sandi - in only his second try for the Stormers - who opened the visitors' account in Treviso, peeling off the back of a maul and surging ahead to score the opening try.

The Stormers weren’t able to get more ascendancy as Benetton started racking up penalties against the visitors, and moving forward with every shrill blast of the whistle.

Jacob Umaga sent the first two home to take back the lead 6-5.

Umaga and Matthee swopped penalties but there was a clear momentum shift for the home side and it was underlined when Ignatio Mendi started a counter attack that led to Tommaso Menoncello drawing the defence before sending a skip pass to his midfield partner, Leonardo Marin, who ran 30 metres untouched to score.

STRONG SECOND HALF

That left matters 16-8 to the home side at the break, but the Stormers weren’t going to go quietly into the night, and the second half gave them the opportunity to haul that lead in.

It took just eight minutes into the second half for that shift to come. New Bok call-up Zach Porthen managed a superb turnover and the ball was shifted left and right.

Eventually when it popped back to Matthee there was a gap the size of Table Mountain in front of him and he wasn’t going to let it slide.

He added another penalty a few minutes later and it was clear the Stormers were in charge.

While Benetton scored a late try, it was disallowed and the Stormers kept marching upfield, clinching the win with a Porthen try at the death, with another Matthee penalty eight minutes earlier keeping the pressure up.

The first phase of the URC is over and players will head to their national teams, but for John Dobson the first five games couldn’t have gone better, and Matthee’s performance on the night underlined that.

Their fans might not have been expecting it to take a 63rd minute penalty from Jean Smith for them to put daylight between themselves and the Scarlets but the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ 29-19 win in Durban would have breathed some much needed air into their Vodacom URC challenge.

Smith’s kick from a few metres into the Scarlets’ half put to an end a disturbing sequence for the Sharks where they produce a patches of good rugby and score a try only for the visitors to hit back with a score of their own, with the Scarlets’ tries mainly due to defensive sloppiness from the Sharks.

While the defensive malaise of giving away soft scores continues, the attack was at least a bit better in this game, with Smith, who played as a late replacement for Siya Masuku, who withdrew on the eve of the match, at least engaging the opposition defenders with his flat lining approach, ability to pass through the tackle as well as enjoying a good game from a kick out of hand viewpoint.

Of course, the Sharks would have been expected to beat the bottom team on the log when playing at home, albeit that the Scarlets did have some big cattle back for this game after recovering from injury and looked more like the team that finished eighth last season, so any euphoria will be tempered.

But at least it was a start for a Sharks team that hadn’t really left home base in the competition before now.

The game started in sweltering heat, which was why there were water breaks at the end of each quarter, but a strong westerly came through around kick-off time to cool down both the players and the crowd that pitched at Hollywoodbets Kings Park to watch their team.

POSITIVE START

The home support would have been warmed early by their team’s positive start, with the best attacking play from the Sharks coming early on.

The game was just five minutes old when the Sharks created enough space by drawing the man and putting players into little holes to make it an impressive buildup to a try that saw Siya Kolisi go clear on the left before the ball was transferred in the other direction for Vincent Tshituka to score.

Smith missed that conversion so when some sloppy defence saw Scarlets centre Johnny Williams wriggle through to create the space for lock Harvey Cuckson to surge forward before making the try-scoring pass to Springbok hooker Marnus van der Merwe, Sam Costelow’s conversion put the Scarlets into a 7-5 lead.

Straight away the Sharks struck back with Emmanuel Tshituka being played into space off an attacking lineout, and when Smith converted the No 8’s try the game appeared to be going to the anticipated script again as the Sharks went 12-7 up.

Only the script was to be one of tit for tat for a while longer, this time the other Tshituka, Vincent, being either sloppy or lazy in getting down to a ball hoofed forward by Scarlets fullback Blair Murray and the same player ended up scoring the try after it slipped past him.

Costelow’s conversion made it 14-12 but the Sharks were soon back in Scarlets territory and an attacking lineout set up by a penalty saw prop Lee-Marvin Mazibuko barrel over for the third Sharks try after a good take from Marvin Orie, who impressed as the second row partner to Eben Etzebeth and will be knocking on the Bok door again with more performances like this one.

Mazibuko, the former Stormers front-ranker, was playing because of an injury sustained in training by the starting tighthead Vincent Koch.

The Springbok was part of most of the pre-match warmup session so whatever happened to him must have happened late.

DEFENCE LOOKED VULNERABLE

Smith’s conversion of the try made it 19-14 and that was the halftime score.

The Sharks would have wanted to score first in the second half to get the show on the road, and to convert the convincing superiority they had in the forward battle, particularly in the set-scrums, but that did not happen.

Instead there was more lax defence from the Sharks as Scarlets wing Tom Rodgers ghosted through off the flyhalf channel to score another try that the home team should have considered soft.

This time Costelow failed with the conversion attempt so the score stayed 19-all and Scarlets did not score again in the game.

Instead it was the Sharks who netted their fourth and bonus point try through the national captain going over after the Sharks had laid siege to the Scarlets line.

That was in the 48th minute, with Smith’s conversion making it 26-19 to the Sharks.

Some 15 minutes later the Sharks showed their respect to the gritty Scarlets challenge by asking Smith to line up his long range kick and once the Sharks were 10 points clear that was pretty much the match.

A WIN IS A WIN

It was one of those frustrating games from a Sharks viewpoint where it kept looking like they might be creating something promising, and scrumhalf Grant Williams was often the source of that, while Andre Esterhuizen was his customary big presence on the gainline, but it just didn’t come off.

Perhaps more time together will see the Sharks gel better but the next time the Sharks coach will see his full team together is likely to be the Investec Champions Cup game against Saracens here in mid-December.

In the meantime he does have five weeks to build up to a crucial away game against Connacht in Galway and at this point it looks as though he has been helped by the players that will have been made available to him through Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus’s latest selection.

It wasn’t the rousing win many would have hoped for after last week’s upset at the hands of Ulster but at least the Sharks will head into the break with a win.

That is something to build on, but a lot of building is still necessary.

The early start, the heat and the altitude were always going to be a test for Ulster, who lost five players in the week, including four to the Irish national side, but the game was a straight slugfest right until the final 15 minutes where the Lions pulled away and their opponents faded in the heat.

That was always going to be the plan for the home side, but it will be seen as a massive morale-boosting win, especially against a side that has accounted for the Sharks and Bulls this season already.

After three opening losses, the Lions now have back-to-back wins and will be looking forward to their Jukskei derby in three weeks' time when they face the Bulls.

But while their plan came together in the end, there were some harrowing moments in a shootout game that saw plenty of tries, not much defence and a lot to talk about for the small crowd that turned up to watch the early fixture.

A DOZEN TRIES

In the end there were 12 tries scored - three in the first seven minutes of the game - with the Lions shading Ulster seven tries to five, as the crowd got full value for their money.

The Lions’ game management in the second half was the difference, and when their opposition started to tire, they put their foot down and roared away on the scoreboard.

Not even a hat-trick to Ulster winger Robert Baloucoune could stop the Lions from getting the victory and ending the unbeaten run of the Belfast side.

Still, Ulster will be happy with their haul of six points from two games, while the Lions are very much on the front foot again after starting off the season pretty dismally, although even the two victories won’t erase the concerns about their long-term form.

The gutsy performance will ease some of that pressure, but the Lions still face questions long term after using a number of their URC players for the Currie Cup and that might well catch up with them in the new year.

To put their second-half performance in perspective, Ulster led 19-17 at the break, but the Lions scored four tries in the final stanza - three in the final 10 minutes to pull away from Ulster.

FAST START

The lightning start was not unexpected, but three tries in the opening seven minutes, and a disallowed Lions try thereafter certainly set the pace for the competition.

It didn’t take long for the players to trouble the scorers, as on the first attack, Asenathi Ntlabakanye fed SJ Kotze into a hole and the prop went over for the opening try in the first minute.

Ulster replied through a turnover ball being sent wide and Baloucoune was put into space to run 60 metres downfield and score.

That didn’t stop the Lions attacking, and their multiple phases stretched Ulster to the breaking point two minutes later where Quan Horn could let Eduan Keyter burst over the line with a short pass to restore the lead.

The slugfest continued, and it was James Hume to score next to level matters, this time through a sustained attack that ended with a chip that he took under the posts to dot down after TMO confirmation.

Chris Smith added a penalty, but Ulster’s attacking ambitions weren’t done yet, and they answered with Baloucoune going over in the corner by the slimmest of margins to get his second try.

DOMINANT SCRUM

The Lions found some significant advantage with their scrum dominating almost every set, and punching up the middle made some impressive metres for them.

So much so that it wasn’t a surprise that Ruan Venter ran onto a perfect pass to barge over the line and open the scoring for the second half.

Six minutes later Baloucoune got his hat-trick through another corner effort that was exceptionally on brand for the winger.

But then the Lions took over. Renzo du Plessis injected a lot of pace into the loose trio and went over on the hour mark after wiggling out of a tackle and not being held, standing up and surging over to score.

Ulster were still counter-punching and Dave McCann pulled them back into losing bonus point territory a few minutes later.

Two late tries by Conraad van Vuuren ended matters as the Lions' power and pace combined to flood the tired Belfast side and make the scoreline look a lot more flattering than it was.

A poor final quarter, when they lost the referee, cost the Vodacom Bulls a chance of ending off their Vodacom United Rugby Championship tour with a win as they slumped to a 21-12 loss against Glasgow Warriors in the Scottish city on Friday night.

A crucial decision - a knock on that cost a try - and then conceding a penalty try shortly afterwards was the death knell for the Bulls as the 14 point turnaround ended their hopes as they looked to have control of the game, but surrendered it within moments to the home side and never recovered.

They then lost referee Craig Evans, who heavily penalised them in the final minutes of the contest, and with it lost the chance to take home points from their final game on tour.

But while the night was a disappointment, the Bulls looked better on defence for large parts of the game, held out the Glasgow attack - which is statistically the best in the competition, and counter-punched when it was needed to keep themselves in the game.

MISSED DECISIONS

Evans missed a number of decisions, including a bad cleanout in Glasgow’s final try, a neck roll and other incidents, but unfortunately the Bulls have to accept that as part of the process.

In the first half, with only 30 percent of the ball, the Bulls did incredibly well to go into the break just two points behind and were ahead at one point.

Had Kurt-Lee Arendse’s try been awarded, it would have put them on the road to a remarkable victory against a Glasgow side that had everything going for them.

But it wasn’t and Glasgow scored three minutes later via a penalty try to take the game away from the Bulls and get themselves the victory they needed to continue their run of momentum.

It will mean that the Bulls head home with just one victory out of three, after two home wins started the competition off in style for them.

But coach Johan Ackermann, while not happy with the loss, will feel at least there is progress as their defensive system held strong for long periods during the game despite being overwhelmed and several 50-50s going against them.

ENOUGH PROMISE

Still, there is enough promise in this Bulls team to see them tightening up and if they get their Bok contingent back to make a run for the title next year if they are still in the running.

The Bulls have shown that on the counter attack they can be deadly, but there needs to be a lot of work still to get them shored up so that they don’t leak soft tries.

Still, that final quarter sunk them and the turnaround try was ruthless in this and gave Glasgow the momentum to get the win.

It all came after Glasgow started sensationally, dominating the first four and a half minutes to lead to Sione Tuipulotu going over for the opening try after dominating those opening stanzas.

Despite little ball, the Bulls were able to counter punch six minutes later when Willie le Roux took an up and under and in the motion of catching it, popped it to a flying Sebastian de Klerk, who ran through most of the Warriors team, before putting Stravino Jacobs away to score.

The arm wrestle was apparent as neither side took charge before the Bulls took the lead in the second half, when a quick throw in by Le Roux was turned into an attack by Ruan Nortje and De Klerk, the latter who opened up the defence before sending the fullback over the line for what looked like an exceptional try.

Their third try was disallowed after Le Roux chipped over the defence, collected and did a one-two with Kurt-Lee Arendse to score, when replays showed a knock on and the try was disallowed.

CRUCIAL DECISION

That proved to be a crucial decision as shortly afterward Glasgow marched forward to the Bulls line with a maul that went down and referee Craig Evans gave the Bulls the blame, awarding a penalty try and yellow carding Francois Kloppers in the process, despite replays showing it went down naturally.

That swung the game in the visitors favour and the string of penalties against the Bulls afterwards were deadly, allowing Nathan McBeth to go over the line from close range and seal the game.

Cobus Reinach will make his DHL Stormers debut off the bench in their fifth round Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash with Benetton in Treviso on Saturday.

The Springbok scrumhalf joined the Cape franchise from France during the off-season but his first full exposure to his new squad and teammates would have been when he joined them ahead of last week’s game against Zebre in Parma and watched from the stands. So it makes sense that Dobson is not rushing him in.

It might come as a surprise that Dewaldt Duvenage is the man starting and not Stefan Ungerer but it was always on the cards that Duvenage would get to play in a stadium in Treviso he knows so well against a team he played for for several years. It will probably be the last time Duvenage does play in Treviso as he is coming to the end of a long playing career and is being transitioned into a coaching role.

Duvenage’s selection into the No 9 jersey is one of nine changes in a side that showcases the depth that is building at the Cape union. In the sense that even though there are so many changes it is still a strong side.

There is an entirely new front five, although there is nothing really new about Salmaan Moerat, the occasional Springbok captain and regular Stormers skipper who returns to the side after injury to wear the No 4 jersey as second row partner to JD Schickerling.

Vernon Matongo may be a new kid on the block but has done well as a starter so his return for veteran Ali Vermaak, with Oli Kebble getting his first appearance of his second Stormers career as his back-up off the bench, is hardly a surprise.

The same for Andre-Hugo Venter coming in at hooker and soon to be new Bok Zachary Porthen dropping to the bench to accommodate the fit again Sazi Sandi. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has flown home to rest up before the end of year Springbok tour but Damian Willemse continues at inside centre, with Jurie Matthee coming in at flyhalf.

Seabelo Senatla returns on the wing after missing out last week at the last minute, and Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has gone for what looks like a powerful six/two bench split, with Adre Smith and Ruben van Heerden among the forwards and the X-factor of Reinach and Wandisile Simelane filling the roles of backs back-up.

The Lions have made three changes to the side that beat Scarlets for their Vodacom United Rugby Championship Round 5 fixture against Irish side Ulster at Ellis Park on Saturday.

After the news broke that they have lost Springbok scrumhalf Morne van den Berg to a hamstring injury and flanker JC Pretorius to a knee injury, the Lions were forced to make at least one change.

Van den Berg didn’t play against Scarlets, but the Lions didn’t want to risk him as he is leaving on the Springbok tour of Europe this weekend and will hope he is ready to play for the Boks.

Pretorius is a particularly bad injury loss but is replaced by Jarod Cairns at flank as the Lions will be wary of their own deficiencies at the breakdown.

Reinhard Nothnagel returns to the starting line-up after playing off the bench last weekend while in the only change to the backline, Bronson Mills lines up at 12 in the place of Richard Kriel.

Kriel wasn’t listed as an injury concern, so the move is tactical.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks and the Vodacom Bulls go into the final round of the first phase of the Vodacom URC under pressure but the DHL Stormers have a great opportunity to finish off with a statement win that will inspire confidence and create a strong platform for what comes next.

For the Stormers what comes next after Saturday’s clash with Benetton in Treviso is a game against their fellow top bracketed team on the log Munster at the end of November.

Munster are in form so that will be a tough game to win given that it clashes with the Springboks playing Wales in Cardiff the same day and therefore some top players, which has now been expanded to include Ben-Jason Dixon and Zachary Porthen, won’t be available.

So the Stormers would love to head into that game with the buffer of having won five out of five, in which case there’d be less on the line.

Then after that it is the derby phase of the competition, so there’s never any release of pressure - all of which makes it imperative to ride the momentum now and beat Benetton to complete an almost perfect segment of five matches.

That’s just one game less than a third of the season so if the Stormers can end with 23 or 24 log points it will also be a significant dent out of what they need to be sure of a top eight finish and strong contenders for a top four. In fact, what they’ve done so far has arguably already made a top eight finish, which means playoff and Investec Champions Cup qualification, seem more than likely.

A bonus point win will leave them halfway to the qualification cut-off, which was last year Scarlets on 48 points. The Stormers finished on 55, which gave them fifth, so they’d be well on course for top four too.

IT’S TOO EARLY TO WRITE OFF THE SHARKS

But this competition is a marathon and not a sprint, something John Plumtree’s Sharks will be pleased about. There’s been a lot of teeth-gnashing in Durban but the Sharks are not the only rated team in a log-jammed bottom half of the table.

Like Leinster, who host the Zebre on Saturday night, the Sharks should stabilise in this last game of the phase as they host the struggling Scarlets.

It won’t have pleased the players themselves but coach Plumtree should have had his mood improved when Rassie Erasmus came up with his latest Springbok selections - although Bongi Mbonambi might well end up travelling with the Boks if Jan-Hendrik Wessels remains banned, as it stands the Sharks will have the services of Mbonambi, Vincent Koch and Makazole Mapimpi when they play Connacht at the end of November; Jason Jenkins is due to play again soon, and there are other experienced players such as Lukhanyo Am and the two Hendrikse brothers, Jordan and Jaden, in the mix to provide a hearty core to the team.

BIG CHALLENGE FOR BULLS

The biggest challenge facing a South African team this week is Johan Ackermann’s Bulls in Glasgow. The Bulls did win their last year under a different coach, but Glasgow, who beat the Bulls at Loftus in the 2024 final, have built up an impressive head of steam in recent matches after an initial blip at the start.

The Bulls had their blip against Ulster in the third game, losing 28-7, but then stabilised a bit when they narrowly beat Connacht in what was always going to be a close shoot-out in Galway last week. Ruan Nortje is back for the Bulls, and as the captain for the season his leadership will be welcomed, as will that of Marcell Coetzee, who comes in for his first tour game after missing the first bit.

A glance through the Bulls team, noting the number of changes that have been made, provides an illustration of the impressive depth that has been built up at the Pretoria franchise. Up front Gerhard Steenekamp and the in-form Johan Grobbelaar are both current Boks in the front row, Cobus Wiese has been capped in the second, while Jeandre Rudolph, considered a journeyman, has been a revelation at No 8 so far.

Kurt-Lee Arendse is a Bok who is playing off the bench and he could bring massive impact if the game is still close when he comes on, but on their home field Glasgow must start as marginal favourites.

The Lions will be looking for their second win of the season when they face Ulster and although the visitors are surging at the moment the fact they had to dig deep to beat two Bok laden South African teams in the last two weekends might just give the Lions a glimmer of an opportunity. As does the fact the game kicks off at 1:45pm, which is tough for a team visiting the highveld.

Fifth round Vodacom United Rugby Championship fixtures

Glasgow Warriors v Vodacom Bulls (Glasgow, Friday 8:45pm)

After a poor start Glasgow have managed to get up to third on the log, and a win will open a bit of a gap on the chasers, which includes the Bulls, who currently have 14 points to Glasgow’s 16 after the same number of games, although that narrow gap in points is big enough to be the difference between third and sixth at present. The Bulls did win their last year, but on their home ground Glasgow should be favoured.

Having said that, the Bulls should allow themselves to be spurred on and motivated by the ridiculous ruling that has robbed them of the services of Jan-Hendrik Wessels. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but am completely aligned with the national coach's social media rant about it.

How do you ban a player on another player's say-so, without that player being present to defend himself, and apparently without any evidence?

Prediction: Glasgow to win by 7

Lions v Ulster (Johannesburg, Saturday 1:45pm)

Apparently some of the Ulster Irish internationals went back home this week, which may present a window of opportunity to the Lions. So will the fact that Ulster have had to expend a lot of mental as well as physical energy over the last two weeks in overcoming two more star studded South African teams in the Bulls and Sharks.

The second game on tour is often a mental hurdle for visiting sides, and this game is being played in the early afternoon on the highveld. Good though Ulster have been, I’ve got a funny feeling the Lions might scrape it.

Prediction: Lions to win by less than 7

Hollywoodbets Sharks v Scarlets (Durban, Saturday 4pm)

The Sharks owe both their public and their coach one after last week’s disappointment against Ulster, and word from the camp is that the leaders Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth took charge on Monday and made it clear to the troops they owe Plumtree more than they delivered last week.

The vultures are circling, although it is hard to imagine what good coach would want the job given that the problems at the Sharks preceded Plumtree’s arrival and may be rooted in the legacy left by the previous CEO Eduard Coetzee through some of the appointments he made.

Plus of course the obstacle that having so many Boks on the books has become at this time. The Sharks should win this game comfortably though and if there is any sense of reason in Plumtree’s bosses they should give him a stay of execution and see what he can do in the next month with the players left behind for the Connacht game.

If a shakeup is necessary, it might be elsewhere in the Sharks’ system. Let Plumtree be the main boss and then judge him.

Dragons v Ospreys (Newport, Saturday 6:30pm)

A Welsh derby is a bit like the old Australian derbies in Super Rugby used to be for South African viewers - in other words not particularly appealing. Most local viewers will surely be watching the alternative game in this time slot, Benetton against the Stormers, but this one is 13th (Ospreys) against 15th (Dragons), with the Scarlets bottom. The Dragons are at home but the Ospreys have looked a slightly better team this season to my eyes.

Prediction: Ospreys to win by 8

Benetton v DHL Stormers (Treviso, Saturday 6:30pm)

Much has been made about the Stormers’ good wins away from home in the last two weeks but their forwards coach Rito Hlungwani was quite right when he said earlier this week, “We have beaten those two teams before.”

They have, but they haven’t beaten Benetton away in the competition, so this is a frontier they desperately want to cross. It isn’t clear exactly which Boks have stayed on and will be available for the game, with the team announcement set for later on Friday, but what we do know is that Cobus Reinach looks set for his Stormers debut.

The Stormers are riding a wave of momentum so while Benetton will be tough, and will have their Italian internationals back after they missed out on last week’s loss to Edinburgh away, I fancy them to do what they failed to do two years ago, when Joseph Dweba dived over the wrong line for what he thought was the winning try, by closing out a close one.

At the same time, we can’t be completely sure of that until we’ve seen the Stormers team, for it does depend who is playing.

Leinster v Zebre (Dublin, Saturday 6:30pm)

:Leinster will be chastened by last week’s experience of losing so comprehensively to arch-rivals Munster, and will also have the cracker under them when they look at their current log position (12th). Zebre are in fact ahead of them, three points and four positions ahead of them, in eighth. But Zebre don’t travel well and Leinster need to hit their straps so it should be a comprehensive Leinster win.

Prediction: Leinster to win by more than 20.

Cardiff Rugby v Edinburgh (Cardiff, Saturday 8:45pm)

Edinburgh cooked last week against Benetton and that result lifted them to ninth, but Cardiff are hard to beat on their home ground. The hosts are currently fourth, just three points behind the only two unbeaten teams after four games (Ulster are unbeaten but have only played three), and they should retain that position after this round.


Prediction: Cardiff to win by 7

Munster v Connacht (Limerick, Saturday 8:45pm)

Ireland derbies are always difficult to predict and Stuart Lancaster’s impact as coach is starting to be felt at Connacht but on their home field the joint log-leaders with the Stormers should win.

Prediction: Munster to win by 8

The Vodacom Bulls will appeal the massive nine-week suspension given to their Springbok utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels by a Vodacom United Rugby Championship disciplinary hearing on Wednesday.

The decision was only announced on Thursday afternoon, but it means that Wessels will not play any rugby for the rest of the calendar year and will miss several massive games should the ban be upheld.

The perplexing thing is that the Bulls have privately confirmed that no new video evidence was presented at the hearing and Wessels was allegedly banned on the same footage that the refereeing team could not find clear evidence of foul play.

If this is the case, it is deeply troubling, because if Wessels is found guilty without clear evidence it opens a dangerous can of worms that could backfire badly in the future.

PERPLEXING DECISION

The Vodacom Bulls have confirmed that Wessels was due to play for the team in Friday night’s URC match against Glasgow Warriors but was withdrawn because of the disciplinary hearing’s findings.

Privately the Bulls are incensed that the finding could have been made given there was an allegation but no clear evidence backing it up.

Considering two other high profile incidents in the past few years and how they were handled, it makes the decision even more perplexing.

In the British and Irish Lions tour in 2021 Kyle Sinckler was accused by Bok flanker Franco Mostert that he bit him in a ruck. The allegation was dismissed by a disciplinary committee because there was no clear evidence.

In the 2023 World Cup England flanker Tom Curry accused Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi of making a racial slur against him during the game.

World Rugby investigated the allegation and found that without evidence, they could not take the matter further.

But in this case the disciplinary committee, consisting of three Welsh officers - chair Declan Goodwin and Simon and Leah Thomas - have all found Wessels guilty, and have given him a harsh ban when there does not seem to be evidence of the incident itself.

RASSIE REACTS

The fallout from the verdict has begun, with the Bulls privately fuming and readying themselves for the appeal process while even Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus seems to have weighed in.

While Erasmus didn’t indicate that he was specifically referring to the reporting about the verdict on Wessels, it seemed that he was as Wessels is in the squad as his third hooker for the upcoming tour of Europe.

On Wednesday another Springbok - Makazole Mapimpi - was banned for five weeks by a disciplinary committee for a tip tackle.

Mapimpi wasn’t in the Bok squad for the tour but was listed as a standby player.

URC STATEMENT

On Thursday, almost 24 hours after the hearing took place and way outside the normal protocols, the URC released this statement: “ The Disciplinary process related to Jan-Hendrik Wessels citing in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship Round 4 game against Connacht Rugby on Friday, October 17 has resulted in a nine game suspension.

“The Citing Commissioner in charge reported Vodacom Bulls player No 2 (Jan-Hendrik Wessels), for an act of foul play in the 18th minute under Law 9.27 – A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship. This includes grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.

“The Panel overseeing the disciplinary process Declan Goodwin (Chair, Wales), Simon Thomas (Wales) and Leah Thomas (Wales) were satisfied that an act of foul play had occurred and found the incident met the Red Card threshold, with entry of low-end warranting a 12 week suspension. The Panel reduced the suspension by three weeks (25 per cent mitigation) due to the Player's good conduct prior to and at the hearing and good record which results in a nine game suspension.”

The list of games that Wessels is banned for includes the Springbok tour of Europe and the Bulls Investec Champions Cup games in December.

CONCERN ON PRECEDENT BEING SET

The concern is precisely that if players can be banned on allegations from other players without evidence, it could lead to this happening across the league, as a precedent has been set.

If the appeals process confirms the original decision, it would be very difficult not to use that precedent in other situations.

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone told Supersport: “The Vodacom Bulls fully respect and will adhere to the judicial process, which provides for an appeal opportunity, which we will use.”

The Vodacom Bulls continue to wait for the official verdict from the Vodacom United Rugby Championship disciplinary committee, despite a guilty finding against Springbok utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels on Tuesday.

The verdict, not released officially but reported by other news outlets of Wessels being banned for nine weeks after he was found guilty of grabbing the groin area of Connacht flanker Josh Murphy despite there being no video evidence of the incident.

While privately officials from the URC said the verdict would be made public on Thursday morning, there was no sign of it all day as the Bulls continued to wait.

But the fall out from the expected verdict has begun, with the Bulls privately fuming and readying themselves for the appeal process while even Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus seems to have weighed in.

While Erasmus didn’t indicate that he was specifically referring to the reporting about the verdict on Wessels, it seemed that he was as Wessels is in the squad as his third hooker for the upcoming tour of Europe.

On Wednesday another Springbok - Makazole Mapimpi - was banned for five weeks by a disciplinary committee for a tip tackle.

Mapimpi wasn’t in the Bok squad for the tour but was listed as a standby player.

The reason why the Bulls are fuming about any possible sanction for Wessels is precisely because there doesn’t seem to be any video evidence on the incident, and simply accepting the accusation of an opposition player would be a very dangerous precedent that could have far-reaching implications for rugby.

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone told Supersport: “While the URC has not yet issued official communication, the Vodacom Bulls fully respect and will adhere to the judicial process, which provides for an appeal opportunity.”

It has been confirmed that no new evidence was offered at the disciplinary hearing, and the reasons for the supposed ban remain unknown.

Normally the URC sends out a press release detailing the findings within an hour of the verdict being known, or at least the same day.

On Thursday Bulls coach Johan Ackermann confirmed that Wessels would have played for the side in their next URC match against Glasgow Warriors on Friday night but had been withdrawn because of the disciplinary decision.

The Bulls named their side for the clash without Wessels in the match day 23 and until the official written decision is released, the future is unclear for his participation in both URC games and the Springbok tour of Europe.

Glasgow Warriors coach Franco Smith says his players are “hitting their straps” as they head into Friday night’s big Vodacom URC clash with the Vodacom Bulls.

Smith’s team have scored 13 tries in their last two matches while recording bonus point victories at home to Dragons RFC (49-0) and away to the Ospreys (42-17).

That has taken the 2024 champions up to third in the table, just three points off the top.

Now comes the Scotstoun showdown with the sixth-placed Vodacom Bulls from Pretoria, which has all the makings of being a cracking contest with both teams having won three of their first four league matches.

“It's the start of the season, so it takes a while for all the engines to start up,” said Smith.

"But the players are now starting to find their way and hitting their straps.

“In this first block, we had three objectives - to manage the internationals and allow them to be in top form when they go into the autumn series; to continue to bring young players through, creating a new generation of Warriors; and at the same time to keep the performance.

“Those were our main ingredients and objectives, and, bar the result against Benetton, I think we have seen that progression.”

Now for the Vodacom Bulls in a repeat of the 2024 Vodacom URC grand final.

“We know we must be at our best as we look to finish the first block of fixtures on a high,” said Smith.

“The Bulls possess one of the strongest and deepest squads in the URC and are consistent in the quality of performances they produce.

“We know we must be at the right level physically and mentally in order to meet their challenge.”

Smith was particularly pleased with last weekend’s six-try win over the Ospreys at the Brewery Field given what a fortress the Bridgend ground has been for the Welsh team over the past couple of years.

“I was very nervous around that one. We knew it was going to be tough,” said the former Springbok who played at the venue in his days with Newport RFC.

“But the boys stepped up from an emotional and creative point of view.

“The Ospreys are a very good team, very well coached, tenacious. They never back off; they made some big collisions. We had to break them down.

“I'm delighted that we performed well. There was good energy, we were technically good, and there was good application. It was much better.

“Consistency is obviously what we're after. I still feel our scrum set-piece can improve, and I think there's more from the individuals in our team to add value to the general structure.”

As for the Vodacom Bulls, they were involved in a much closer contest last weekend, squeezing past Connacht Rugby 27-26 in Galway amid a dramatic conclusion with the hosts having a chance to snatch the spoils at the death following Mack Hansen’s late try, but failing to land the touchline conversion.

“Obviously, you couldn’t get it closer,” said Bulls coach Johan Ackermann.

“We could have lost it. They had the kick to win it, so we were grateful to get over the line, but I felt we did a lot of good things.

“We probably didn’t feel too guilty about the win because we really were in control of the game until that last moment.”

Ackermann took particular heart from the way his team bounced back from the previous week’s 28-7 defeat to Ulster in Belfast.

“The pleasing thing was the character. I asked the players that we don’t have that big slump we had against Ulster, and they showed that fight,” he said.

However, he admitted there is still work to do in terms of cutting out costly lapses in concentration.

“The ability is there, the skill is there, but we tend to switch off,” he said.

“We feel in control, then one little mistake snowballs, and we let the other side in. Every week, you play quality sides that will punish you when you make errors, so if we want to progress, we need to cut those mistakes.”

The trip to Scotland brings down the curtain on a three-match adventure in Europe for the Vodacom Bulls.

“It is a tough old tour. But then again, we are getting it out of the way early,” said Ackermann.

“It’s a challenge playing Glasgow at their home. They’ve been one of the most consistent sides the last couple of years under Franco Smith and are one of the best attacking sides in the competition.

“They are well coached style-wise and tactics-wise with quality players. They have a strong culture and a passionate crowd.

“It’s another opportunity to measure ourselves. As a team, we are still not firing like we want to, but this is another chance.”

In terms of the team news, Glasgow have made six changes from the side that beat the Ospreys, while second row Ruan Nortje returns to captain the Vodacom Bulls.

The expectation that Jordan Hendrikse would be given the reins to become the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ game driver in their fifth round Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash with the Scarlets in Durban appears to have been scuppered by the suspension slapped on Makazole Mapimpi.

The Springbok wing was banned for five weeks after a URC disciplinary hearing on Wednesday following the red card he received for a tip tackle in the game against Ulster last Saturday. His absence from the Scarlets game meant that coach John Plumtree needed a wing and it makes sense for him to move Edwill van der Merwe back there.

Van der Merwe has played the last few games for the Sharks at No 15, but that was before Hendrikse, who can play both fullback and flyhalf and is equally adept at both, was back from his injury battle.

Still, it is a pity that Hendrikse won’t be wearing the No 10 against Scarlets as there is a good argument to be made for bedding him in and backing him as your permanent game driver so that he can build his confidence. Siya Masuku, who will start at pivot on Saturday, is a decent player but he can be inconsistent and was poor against Ulster.

He was also lining up much deeper than he used to in that game so it will be interesting to see if any adjustment is made in the second Hollywoodbets Kings Park game of the season.

Meanwhile Eben Etzebeth has taken the captaincy reins from Vincent Tshituka, which may be sourced in the strong leadership role the Bok lock has taken off the field this week in a period of mini-crisis for the Sharks.

It is understood that he and Siya Kolisi addressed the rest of the team on Monday and pledged support for the coach and loyalty to the jersey after last week’s disjointed performance led to an outcry from critics who expect a star studded team to always win no matter what.

There have been some other adjustments to the team that played last week, with Emmanuel Tshituka coming in at No 8 for Phepsi Buthelezi, who is on the bench, thus joining his brother and Kolisi in the back row.

Lukhanyo Am will also start in the midfield alongside Andre Esterherhuizen this week at the expense of Jurenzo Julius, who also plays off the bench. Am’s selection means that it is an all Bok midfield.

Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann again rang the changes to his side, as they said goodbye to some Springboks and welcomed back season captain Ruan Nortje to the side for their Vodacom United Rugby Championship match against Glasgow Warriors on Friday night.

Nortje is joined by fellow captain Marcell Coetzee, who missed the tour with a concussion, but joined up with the team in Glasgow. Nortje was rested for the first two weeks of the tour and will join up with the Springboks after the game.

Many of the other changes are rotational with Gerhard Steenekamp moving back into the starting line-up alongside Johan Grobbelaar and Mornay Smith coming in at tighthead after Wilco Louw returned home.

Nortje will partner Cobus Wiese in the second row, while last week’s captain Reinhardt Ludwig, moves to seven to join Coetzee and Jeandre Rudolph in the back row. That means that Nama Xaba and JJ Theron, who started last week, drop down to the bench.

In the backline Embrose Papier returns to the starting line-up, swapping with two try hero Paul de Wet while Stravino Jacobs is on the wing for Canan Moodie, who returned home before reporting for Springbok duty.

Jan-Hendrik Wessels is the other notable absence after apparently being banned by a URC tribunal, which at the time of writing had still not been made public.

The Vodacom Bulls have lost just two of their last seven away games in the URC, but Glasgow Warriors’ only defeat so far this campaign was a narrow loss against Benetton in Round Two.

The Warriors have lost just twice at home in any competition since December 2023, both in the URC against Ospreys in March and against this week’s opponents, in April.

The two sides have met on five previous occasions with the Bulls having the edge by three wins to two. The Vodacom Bulls’ 26-19 win on their most recent visit to Scotstoun in April is the South Africans’ only victory in Scotland.

The omission of several Springbok World Cup winners from the current Castle Lager Outgoing Tour squad this week may have raised a few eyebrows, especially as it has seemed to suggest that a slow culling of the 2019 World Cup squad has had to start, but it could also work out to be a massive positive for South African rugby as a whole.

For the first time in a long time, the Vodacom Bulls have supplied the most players for the Springboks with nine members of their squad heading north with coach Rassie Erasmus’ team, and while the immediate tests are the immediate focus, there is a massive tour by New Zealand that will take the focus next year for eight glorious weeks.

The Greatest Rivalry tour, which takes place in 2026, will see New Zealand face off with the Springboks in four tests while the four Vodacom United Rugby Championship franchises each get a date with the All Blacks during the tour as well.

DISCARDED BOKS GOOD FOR FRANCHISES

Now while it may have been a bit of a shock for some to see some of the Springboks who were instrumental in bringing the World Cup home being left behind for this tour, there are definitively some positives in it for the franchises.

The Sharks have perennially supplied the most Springboks to the national side, and have struggled in the URC without their big name players. They have had to sacrifice continuity and some big firepower in the name of the national interest, and that hasn’t always impressed their fans.

And just as the Bulls will start learning what that means and what squad depth really means when it comes to the rest of the season without more than half a team of stars, lets rather look to the positives for the franchises, especially with the Greatest Rivalry tour.

The Sharks suddenly have the likes of Bongi Mbonambi, Vincent Koch, Makazole Mapimpi (when his ban expires) available for them, the Bulls have Willie le Roux back at home plotting URC games with them and not on tour with the Boks.

STILL HAVE THE HUNGER

Those players will hopefully have that hunger still to play for the national side and given their absence will fuel the way they approach their game. If there is anything that these players enjoy more, it is aiming for a target, and aiming to prove someone wrong.

All of the players who have been left behind - Lukhanyo Am - included in this category are still top class players and can offer a lot to their franchises.

They bring their experience of two World Cup victories and a plethora of tests under their belt and that should filter through to some of their younger teammates.

They can no longer be accused of looking to protect themselves for test duty because if they want to play test rugby again they need to show it. The players may be entering the winter of their careers, but it doesn’t mean they don’t have a lot to offer their franchises.

Ask any Springbok and they will tell you the worst possible thing is to be away from the national side. That feeling of missing out will fuel their hunger going forward, even if it is their last few seasons on the field.

So then, turning to the Greatest Rivalry Tour next year, the one concern is what sort of opposition the franchises will be able to put up against an All Black touring team?

WEAKENED FRANCHISE SIDES BENEFIT NOBODY

If the Lions tour in 2021 was any indication, withdrawing Springboks from the franchises will severely weaken them in this regard, and for the tour to be successful the midweek games need to be successful as well.

That’s what made tours of the past so memorable - that tough midweek game that really tested a team before they got to the tests.

Thankfully, with the advent of URC, South African sides are a lot better equipped for the task than they were in 2021.

The junior pipeline has been sorted out and the success at national level and Rassie’s desire to create as wide a base as possible has been good for the development of squads across the URC.

Add to that the more experienced players returning from overseas clubs and it would be fair to wager that the franchises are stronger now than they were in 2021.

GOOD SIGN

That is all a good sign, but think of this for a minute, how much stronger will the Sharks be if they have these discarded Boks playing for them next year against the All Blacks? The same for the Bulls?

There are others who may return to South Africa as well in the meantime and teams will look to strengthen their sides further, while the World Champion Junior Boks side will be a year older and several of them will be up for franchise selection by the time the tour comes around.

In the meantime Erasmus can call on any of these players whenever he needs them and they are keeping match fit in their franchise squads.

And Springbok rugby as a whole is getting stronger.

The All Blacks will pose a formidable challenge on the tour and will benefit immensely from it as well, and there is no way that franchises can take these things for granted.

But the thought of having World Cup winners between the franchise players, helping them as they face the All Blacks, is something that most franchise coaches would welcome.

And could make those midweek games a lot more spicy indeed.

It has been so far so good for the DHL Stormers in their quest to turn around what in previous Vodacom United Rugby Championship seasons has been their biggest bogey - winning away games overseas.

They’ve had no problems in the past winning away in South Africa, and have beaten the Vodacom Bulls more times at Loftus in the URC era than the Bulls have beaten them.

And ditto the Hollywoodbets Sharks, who have scored only one win against the Stormers in the URC - that being a one point win in Durban last November. When the Lions won in Johannesburg last year it was the first time they’d won at home against the Cape side.

But overseas has been different, and it has been costly to their chances of doing well in a competition they won in the inaugural season. The last two years they either started off their campaigns overseas or travelled early on, like they have this year, and on both occasions they struggled and it set back their campaign.

Ultimately, their slow starts were why, while they have always comfortably managed a top eight finish, have fallen tantalisingly short of securing a place in the coveted top four.

Their current tour has been different, with the Stormers winning both overseas games played so far, with the clash with the better of the two Italian teams, Benetton, to come on Saturday. Both games were won fairly comfortably, with Scarlets being seen off 34-0 and Zebre going down 31-13 in Parma last weekend.


EASY WINS BUT AGAINST TEAMS THEY’VE BEATEN BEFORE

That’s a scoreline across two games of 65-13, and it certainly belies any contention that the Stormers may still have a problem playing overseas and haven’t buried whatever it was that was proving a stumbling block. But as assistant coach Rito Hlungwani pointed out, the teams that the Stormers have beaten are teams they’ve beaten away before.

The Stormers scored a nail-biting win over the Scarlets in the first season to clinch their second place finish in the last game of their title winning season of 2021/2022, and they’ve never lost to Zebre. Anywhere. In fact, they were even more comprehensive winners in Parma last season than they were last Saturday - they won 26-5 in October 2024.

They then went on to get thrashed by Edinburgh, a result that brought a whole different perspective. Losing to Benetton in Treviso won’t destroy the Stormers like that result against Sean Everitt’s men did, but winning it will push the narrative of the Stormers having profited from adjustments they’ve made to their touring a lot further.

“I think the big assessment of whether we are cracking the away code can only be made after this game, after the completion of the three games on tour,” said Hlungwani from Treviso.

“We have beaten Scarlets and Zebre overseas before, whereas we have never beaten Benetton on their home ground. This is the moment of truth.

"It is after this that we will look at the adjustments in our travel and the other small changes we have made and decide whether it is working or not. Then we will plan for the next one, which is Munster away (at the end of November).”

NOT READING ANYTHING INTO DEFEAT TO EDINBURGH

Given how Munster and the Stormers have started the season that game in Limerick will be a big one for both teams, but the Stormers can’t afford to be looking ahead at the re-enactment of the 2023 final, which was won by Munster in Cape Town, as Benetton are a tough proposition despite being well beaten by Edinburgh last weekend.

“We have always struggled previously on tour but we are now trying a a couple of things and so far we have picked up good performances,” said the Stormers forwards coach.

“We feel we are ready to compete and go for big wins away from home. With no exception to Benetton, they are a team we can really target as a test to see if our plans and small adjustments to how we tour can make a difference.”

Hlungwani reminded the media that there is folly in reading too much into the away form of the Italian teams in the competition.

“There are no easy games in this competition, we are well aware of that. Benetton are just like Zebre, who lost badly the week before they played us away and then fought hard against us at home. They left out nine top players (in Edinburgh) and clearly target home games. They kept their Italian internationals at home to target this game.

“They will put out their best team against us, with all their Italian internationals, and it is something we are expecting and are ready for,” he added.

REVENGE FOOTING WILL MAKE BENETTON TOUGHER

That might be why newly recalled Springbok blindside flank Ben-Jason Dixon referred to the Treviso game as “a kind of playoff fixture”, a status that was attached to last years visit by Benetton to the DHL Stadium. They came to Cape Town needing to win to get themselves into a prime position on the URC log, and got thumped.

“I didn’t play in that game but I know all the other guys in the camp who did play against them will be drawing on that memory and yes, it will inspire some confidence for us,” said Dixon.

Yes, but at the same time that defeat, which was pretty embarrassing, will put Benetton on a revenge footing. All of which makes Saturday a particularly important day on the Stormers’ calendar and in their season.

Rugby is a team game and assembling a side of superstar players does not lead to success if the different components don’t gel into a unit, as the Hollywoodbets Sharks discovered when they played Ulster after just three days of training in the Vodacom URC last week.

It was noticeable that the longer that game lasted the Sharks started to stabilise and combine better, and had it not been for the silly yellow cards, one of which turned Into a red, picked up by two Springboks, the Durbanites may well have turned around their 17-0 deficit at the end of the third quarter. In the end, they lost 34-26.

One of the players who seemed particularly inspired to almost take it in his own hands to turn the momentum was Andre Esterhuizen, who has been a valuable acquisition to the Sharks since returning from his stint in Ulster.

There is a lot of talk about the Sharks having too many Boks, and it is true in the sense that it means coach John Plumtree never has a pre-season with his team, but Esterhuizen, like Edwill van der Merwe, has proved a shrewd buy.

Having spent most of his early senior career at the Sharks, he does appear to be a player who’s heart bleeds for the team, so it was unsurprising to hear him effectively responding to a meeting held on Monday, where senior players Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth are understood to have made an impassioned plea to their teammates, in kind via an audio issued to the media.

Kolisi and Etzebeth, noting the pressure that their coach John Plumtree has come under because of the perception that a star studded team should always get a big result regardless of the circumstances, apparently called for team work - and the big centre, Esternhuizen, echoed that call.

“It’s been a tough week. Last week we wanted it badly, but I don’t think we were aggressive enough. We made a lot of individual errors, which obviously affects the team,” said Esterhuizen.

“But the boys have responded well. We had some hard meetings on Monday and took a hard look at ourselves. We can’t change what’s happened, so the focus is on the next game before the big break in the URC for the international window.

“The key message [this week] is just everyone getting on the same page so that we can play to the level we know we can. There’s no use having a superstar team if we don’t play like one. Everything revolves around playing as a team. We need to stick together whether things go well or badly. That’s what team sport is about.”

The Sharks will have a good chance to register their first win of their campaign, and pick up full points in the process, when they play the Scarlets at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday. However, while the Scarlets currently foot the log, and were hammered 34-0 by the DHL Stormers two weeks ago, the Sharks won’t have forgotten how tight it was when the two teams met in Durban in a key fixture last season.

That was a different Scarlets team then, they were playing for a place in the playoffs and achieved that, subsequent to which they’ve been severely weakened by injuries.

Yet the memory of that evening game, where dew rendered the ball slippery and neither side could get their attack going, has not faded for the Sharks, which means there shouldn’t be any complacency. Not that there would be after the week the players have had, with sources around the camp indicating that there has been a passionate response to the Kolisi/Etzebeth meeting on Monday.

“Every time we’ve played the Scarlets, they’ve made the game quite messy,” said Esterhuizen. “They like it loose and they love playing off turnovers. Last season when we played them here, it was a messy game with lots of broken play and turnovers.

"We’re expecting a hard physical battle. They’ve also got flair, they play attacking, running rugby. We just need to counter that and play to our strengths.”

The Sharks team for Saturday’s game will be announced later on Thursday.

The Vodacom Bulls are waiting nervously to hear if their Springbok prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels has been banned for nine weeks, as reported by the Sunday newspaper Rapport.

Wessels, who was accused during the Bulls win over Connacht this past weekend of grabbing a player by the groin, never was sanctioned during the game because of a lack of video evidence, but has, if the reporting is correct, been given a hefty fine despite the lack of evidence in the game.

Rapport claimed in an article on Netwerk24 that the player has been informed that he was banned for nine weeks because of the incident, but the Bulls have not received any formal communication in this regard.

Players can only receive a ban after the fact if it is said to be a red card incident, if it wasn’t adjudicated on the field as such.

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone told Supersport: “While the URC has not yet issued official communication, the Vodacom Bulls fully respect and will adhere to the judicial process, which provides for an appeal opportunity.”

If the ban is confirmed officially, there is no doubt the Bulls will want to appeal, as it would be strange to ban a player without video evidence, thereby simply accepting the accusation of an opposition player.

The incident happened during the 19th minute of the game, when Connacht flanker Josh Murphy lashed out against Wessels in the middle of a ruck, striking him in the face and then apologising to the referee, but claiming at the same time that Wessels had grabbed him in the groin area in the ruck.

Whether it happened, accidental or on purpose, the refereeing team as well as TMO Holly Davidson scoured the footage more than 10 times in the game and could find no conclusive evidence of any wrongdoing.

As such, the only incident that the referee could adjudicate on was a strike to the head, which cost Connacht and Murphy a 20-minute red card and incensed the crowd.

But the question remains - how - if multiple replays and an entire refereeing team could find nothing conclusive, could Wessels be banned for the act?

Unless there has been conclusive evidence found in the meantime, it remains a mystery.

The Bulls are likely to appeal and URC are likely only to send out their statement, which is likely to be scrutinised by the Bulls legal team, only on Thursday.

Until then the matter remains in limbo, and Wessels' chances of playing against Glasgow this weekend, and for the Springboks in their five-game tour of Europe, remains in the balance.

Springbok and Hollywoodbets Sharks wing Makazole Mapimpi has been handed a five-match ban that will rule him out of being a standby player for the national squad on their November tour of the UK, Ireland, France and Italy as well as Saturday’s Vodacom URC match against Scarlets.

Mapimpi was not selected for the tour but he was named as one of the standby players who can be called upon in the event of an injury to one of the selected players.

The scorer of the first ever Bok try in a Rugby World Cup final in 2019 has been sanctioned for the illegal tackle that saw him red carded in the second half of the Sharks’ URC loss to Ulster in Durban last weekend.

It seems a harsh ban but it was made clear by the URC disciplinary committee that heard his case that Mapimpi’s poor disciplinary record prior to this last weekend’s game was taken into account in the process.

“The player received two red cards in 2023 and 2025 and cannot be said to have a clean disciplinary record,” said the DC in a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon.

Mapimpi accepted in his responses to the Judicial Officer overseeing the disciplinary process, Sheriff Kathrine Mackie, that he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a red card.

Mackie found that the incident met the red card threshold, with the entry point of low end warranting the suspension.

SHARKS NEED TO REJIG

The fixtures that have been listed as games that the Sharks wing will be unavailable for are Saturday’s URC game against the Scarlets at Hollywoodbets Kings Park and the Bok fixtures against Japan, France, Italy and Ireland in November.

He could theoretically be called to play for the Boks in the last tour game against Wales at the end of November, and will be available to play for the Sharks against Connacht that same day (29 November).

The immediate impact on the Sharks is that they will need to rejig their back three for the Scarlet game, something that might have more far-reaching implications than just who plays on the wing in his place.

Another Bok wing, Edwill van der Merwe, has been used at fullback in the last few games and the absence of Mapimpi might necessitate a move back to the wing, which could mean that Jordan Hendrikse comes into the last line of defence.

With Siya Masuku having been poor against Ulster, and Hendrikse probably the fourth ranked Bok flyhalf, the smart money would have been on Hendrikse playing No 10 against the Scarlets but there is a chance he could be used in his other position, wearing the No 15.
