If there has been one thing that has been a major part of the Lions’ success, it is their ability to back their youngsters and give them the platform for success.
None more so than upstart Siba Mahashe, the hard-working flanker who has quickly become a household name in Lions’ circles, with his barnstorming performances and leadership abilities that has fans talking.
Mahashe has taken to senior rugby with ease, and his performances have been a massive part of why the Lions have been successful this season.
A natural leader, Mahashe hails from Hudson Park High - the same school that gave the Boks Odwa and Akona Ndungane - and has captained every team he has been involved in.
From leading Border at the under-13 Craven week to captaining the SA Schools side, Mahashe has been destined for success for a long time. His elevation to the Lions’ squad is no surprise and its no wonder he has been compared to a young Siya Kolisi by those who know him well.
That’s a massive statement though and Mahashe knows he has to work harder than ever to ensure he is respected for his play on the field.
In only seven games in the URC he has scored four tries, but his impact has been deeper than that. This past weekend against Glasgow Warriors he was everywhere on the field, making the second most tackles in the game - and topping the dominant tackles stat as well.
He also put in a bunch of carries and scored a try, assisting in two others as well.
There will be more to come from Mahashe, but if his start in senior rugby is anything to go by, watch this space.
The Lions newest star may be one to watch for the future.
