Relebohile Mofokeng made a dream debut for his new Belgian club Union Saint Gilloise, converting the decisive penalty to see his side home to success in the season-opening Super Cup on Friday.
The 21-year-old had come on as a substitute after an hour of the match against champions Club Brugge at the Jan Breydelstadion on Friday and helped his side fight their way back from a one goal deficit to draw the match 1-1 and then go onto win on post-match post kicks.
Nicolo Trosoldi put Brugge in the lead four minutes into the second half as he volleyed home from an acute angle at close range, but the match was taken to spot kicks after Union's Argentine centre back Kevin Mac Allister equalised with 13 minutes to play.
All the penalties in the shootout were converted except for that of Cheveyo Tsawa, the teenager freshly signed from FC Zurich, whose effort was saved by Union keeper Vic Chambaere.
With the scores at 4-4 and one kick remaining for Union, Mofokeng stepped up and confidently struck the winning kick into the top corner.
Club Brugger were hosting Friday’s game as champions while Union competed because they won last season’s Belgian Cup.
It was Union’s second success in the Super Cup after their success over Club Brugge two years ago.
Union are next up against Norway’s Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League third preliminary round on Tuesday.
Mofokeng moved from Orlando Pirates after the World Cup.
