Hoërskool De Kruine is poised to make a significant impact as they compete in the Ubuntu Division at the national finals of the DStv Schools Netball Challenge.
Located in Touws River, a quaint rural town approximately 180 kilometres northeast of Cape Town at the base of the stunning Hex River Mountains, the school has achieved the remarkable feat of qualifying for this prestigious tournament.
The team is eager to demonstrate their capabilities alongside the nation's best while gaining invaluable experience in elite-level school competition.
Coach Elmarie Carolison believes this tournament offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her players to not only showcase their talent but also to highlight the potential that resides within rural communities.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for the players. They are not only representing the school but our entire community. This is their moment to shine and make the most of this opportunity. They now understand what is expected of them and will continue striving to become even more competitive. There is certainly immense talent in our town," said Carolison.
SUCCESS STORY
The road to the national finals was marked by a thrilling comeback victory over Weston High of Vredenburg during the provincial finals at DF Akademie last month.
After falling behind for much of the game, the team displayed remarkable resilience, finishing strong with a 25-18 victory that secured their place in the playoff rounds against tournament heavyweights Manzomthombo Secondary.
Their impressive performances throughout the provincial tournament have been hailed as one of the event's biggest success stories, highlighting the quality of players emerging from Touws River despite the challenges often faced by rural schools.
Hoërskool De Kruine will compete alongside Khanyolwethu Secondary in the Ubuntu Division, while Paarl Gimnasium, Paarl Girls' High, and Stellenberg High will represent the Western Cape in the prestigious Botho Division.
The DStv Schools Netball Challenge national finals, proudly powered by Bestmed Medical Scheme, will take place from July 23 to 25 at Hoërskool Dr E.G. Jansen in Boksburg.
Launched in 2021 through a partnership between MultiChoice and South African Schools Netball, the tournament has quickly become one of the country's premier development platforms, offering talented young athletes from urban and rural communities the chance to showcase their skills and aspire to represent the Spar Proteas.
