Rank outsiders Michael Stewart and Jack Buchanan outshone a big-name field on Thursday to share the lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at seven under par.
Stewart, the world number 979, last played a European Tour event three years ago but made the most of a sponsor's invitation to shoot a first-round 65 at Carnoustie.
"Just delighted to be able to be part of the event," said the Scot. "I feel right at home with links golf. I just played really nice all day."

Australia's Buchanan also produced a bogey-free 65 at Kingsbarns.
The tournament is played over three courses –- Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and St Andrews, with the latter also hosting the final day.
One of the most unique events on the golfing calendar also incorporates a team competition with a number of former sports stars and celebrities paired with the professionals.
Matt Fitzpatrick, who arrived in Scotland off the back of his fourth win of the year at the Open de France, shot a four-under 68 at Carnoustie, with Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood two under at the same course.
Five-time major winner Brooks Koepka was three under after a 69 at Carnoustie, while defending champion and home favourite Bob MacIntyre was one under at the same course.
MacIntyre was spoken to by officials after losing his temper over a drone flying above him on the par-three eighth, his penultimate hole of the day.
"It drives me insane. I've had previous for it," said MacIntyre.
"He's obviously heard me swear a few times straight at the camera guy. We'll see what the TD (tournament director) has got to say."
