South African defender Olwethu Makhanya has been transferred from Philadelphia Union to Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers, both clubs announced on Thursday.
He has signed an initial four-year deal, with the option of an additional year, subject to international clearance.

The 22-year-old joins the club ahead of the start of the Scottish Premiership campaign, becoming the eighth addition of the pre-season transfer window.
Speaking after joining Rangers, Makhanya said: “I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started.
"For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes commented: “We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club. He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.
“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”

The Union's first-ever under-22 initiative signing, Makhanya made 42 MLS regular-season appearances (36 starts) and scored one goal during his time with the club. After joining Philadelphia from Stellenbosch in July 2023, the centre back found it hard to break into the first team before establishing himself as a first-team regular during the 2025 season, when Bradley Carnell was appointed coach.
He made his MLS debut against Orlando City in February 2025, and helped anchor a defence that led Philadelphia to finish top of the regular standing.
Makhanya won a first cap for South Africa in May 2026 and was selected to the Bafana Bafana squad for the World Cup, although he did not play at the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
