Orlando Pirates faced a harsh welcome in their opening match of the Netherlands Tour, a reward for their triumph in the DStv Diski Challenge.
The Buccaneers kicked off their series of friendly matches with a 5-0 drubbing by SBV Vitesse at the Papendal Sportcomplex, a stark reminder of the challenges awaiting them in the upcoming season.
From the outset, it was clear that Pirates struggled to match Vitesse’s physicality, a disparity that proved pivotal in the match. Vitesse wasted no time in establishing their dominance, finding the net just four minutes in.
By halftime, they had built a commanding 3-0 lead, leaving the Pirates scrambling for answers. It wasn’t until the final seven minutes of the first half that the Buccaneers began to find their footing, managing their first shot on target and creating a hint of momentum.
The second half saw a noticeable improvement in Pirates’ performance; they generated several scoring opportunities but ultimately lacked the finishing touch needed to convert. The situation took a turn for the worse in the 65th minute when Oscar Gqeke was shown a red card for denying a clear scoring chance for Vitesse. The visitors capitalized on the ensuing free kick, extending their lead before sealing a comprehensive victory with a fifth goal.
Now, the Buccaneers must regroup quickly as they set their sights on bouncing back in their next match against De Graafschap on Thursday.
