Durban City have registered their first win of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season after they downed Kruger United 2-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Tuesday evening.
The result – secured by goals from Jean Lwamba and Gaston Sirino – took the Citizens up to seventh place on the log (five points from four matches), while the Village Boys remained winless and dropped to 16th place (one point from four matches).
Durban City got off to a great start, claiming the lead as early as the seventh minute thanks to a fine finish from Jean Lwamba.
Kruger recovered from the setback and enjoyed a decent amount of possession – even winning half a dozen corner kicks through the first half – and they were close to an equaliser in the 23rd minute when Kwanda Mngonyama had a free header on target, but City goalkeeper Fredrick Asare made an excellent save.
Durban should have had a second goal when Samkelo Maseko set up Tylo Sanger, but the defender was unable to find the back of the net, leaving the game 1-0 in favour of the hosts at the break.
Early in the second half Durban’s Gaston Sirino looked set to score, but was denied by a crucial block from the Kruger defence.
However, the Uruguayan found the back of the net in the 50th minute – opening his account for the Citizens, and putting them 2-0 up on the evening.
Kruger quickly had another chance for Mngonyama, but the veteran was once again denied by Asare at close range to keep the visitors two goals up.
The hosts also hit the post and generally endured a frustrating evening, with their lack of cutting edge in the final third costing them dearly.
The teams will return to Premiership action next week, with Durban at home to Stellenbosch FC, while Kruger will host Orlando Pirates – both on Tuesday 1 September.
