Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt said the sending off of striker Wonderboy Makhubu was a major blow to their hopes of weekend success in the Nedbank Cup and for next Tuesday’s league clash at Kaizer Chiefs.
Hunt has been full of praise for the work of new signing Makhubu as a centre forward target man for Stellenbosch since his arrival from Magesi.
But the 29-year-old striker was dismissed on Wednesday for a dangerous studs-up high tackle on Magesi defender Tshepo Makgoga in the second half of the 1-1 draw at the Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday.
The red card means an automatic two-match suspension, leaving Hunt with a selection dilemma.
His other frontline striker, Tshegofatso Mabasa, missed the midweek’s league game with injury and the coach is not sure the recently arrived forward will be fit to play.
“It’s a huge blow. We're really struggling in front, so it’s such a huge blow. especially with the next two games. There is the cup game and then also the clash against Chiefs, who we were so good against two weeks ago.”
Stellenbosch upset Chiefs 2-1 at Cape Town Stadium in the first round of the Nedbank Cup earlier this month to book a berth in the second round, where they face Lamontville Golden Arrows at Umlazi (kick-off 6pm, live on SuperSport).
Stellenbosch then face Chiefs at Soccer City in the Betway Premiership where the Winelands club are struggling this season.
