Australia and Egypt have faced just twice previously in all competitions, a goalless draw in the 1987 President's Cup (Australia won 4-3 on penalties) and a 3-0 Egypt win in a 2010 friendly.

Australia have avoided defeat in both of their previous two FIFA World Cup games against African sides, a 1-1 draw with Ghana in 2010 and a 1-0 win over Tunisia in 2022. Meanwhile, Egypt’s only previous game against a side from Oceania at the finals was their 3-1 win over New Zealand in this year’s groups.
